Tips for Overcoming a Fear

We all have things we are afraid of. No one will blame you for being fearful. Just don't let that fear immobilize you. No matter what, keep moving.

Fear is much like quicksand - it pulls at our feet and if we stand still long enough, it will suck us down. Very hard to get out of, but possible.

Here are several tips for dealing with fear:

1. Always consider the source. Why do you have this fear? Where did it come from? Have you been dwelling on the negative instead of the positive? Have you been listening to others around you that are dragging you down and feeding you negative talk? If so, you must get away from them quickly. You can't hang around negative people and expect to stay positive.

2. Make a list of the things you HAVE accomplished. Maybe you are taking baby steps in an area to accomplish a bigger goal. No need to be discouraged or fearful there. Celebrate each and every single baby step that gets accomplished. By looking positively at all you have been already able to accomplish, this empowers you to believe in yourself and what you can accomplish.

3.  Look at what your talents, skills, and abilities are. Fear will tells us that we "don't have what it takes." Don't give in to this lie. You've already made a list of all the things you've accomplished. Take it one step further and define what you are good at. What God-given talents and abilities do you have that you love and enjoy? You are good at something. Express that talent. Share it. People need it more than you know.

4. Pray. Prayer is powerful! God does care and will help you fight your fears. Call out to Him for help. Instead of asking Him to take the fear away, ask Him to help you conquer it so it will never bother you again!

5. Let it go. Don't squish down your fear and hang on to it. You don't need it. Once you have conquered it, it will have no power over you. Some people just stuff anger down and don't deal with it. Don't do the same thing with fear. Get it out in the open and deal with it. You'll feel so free when it's over!

Remember this: Fear is only a false perception of something trying to make you believe in it. Once the fear is exposed and dealt with it has no power over you and you will be released!
